SLIPI: Structured Laser Illumination Planar Imaging

Structured illumination reduces multiple scattered light from laser light sheet images, as they appear in sprays and other particle laden flows. This drastically improves the quality of 2-dimensional spray density and droplet size maps.

The structured illumination is obtained by simply adding a SLIPI-optics to the conventional SprayMaster setup. The SLIPI software module in DaVis controls the optics, acquires the structured images, and reconstructs the interference free image. The SLIPI optics module works as an add-on to an existing laser imaging system. It will be applied in the laser beam, in the position of the sheet optics. The output is a sinusoidal modulated laser sheet, where the phase of the modulation is controlled by DaVis software.

From two different versions of the SLIPI Optics Module the most appropriate can be selected depending on the light source available.

The compact prism based version 1 has the highest laser transmission. The modulation is generated by the interfering of the laser beam with itself through a prism. This approach achieves best power efficiency and minimum losses when using highly coherent lasers, such as visible light cw-lasers. A laser sheet optics module is required to work with this module. Existing sheet optics can be retro-fitted.

The universal grating based version 2 works with every type of laser: for visible and UV light, for cw and pulsed lasers. The modulation is generated by a physical grating which makes the optics independent of the wavelength and coherence properties. The SLIPI Optics Module version 2 fully replaces a conventional sheet optics module. All sheet forming lenses are included. 

The software uses a proven algorithm to calculate a cleaned-up image from raw images modulated at three different phases. This removes any unwanted contribution of multiple scattered light from the spray image.
